Rhodes works to maximize its communications to keep the campus informed and safe. In accordance with the Clery Act, these communications fall into three categories:
- Timely warnings are communicated about crimes defined by the Clery Act that take place within Clery Act defined geography, meaning it is in close enough proximity to campus that it might present a significant or continuing threat.
- Emergency notifications are sent when situations occur (contagious diseases, crimes, environmental hazards, or other types of emergencies) that may present an immediate threat to the health or safety of our campus community.
- Campus safety alerts are communicated when the college determines crimes or hazards do not meet the criteria of the previous two types of messages, but the campus community should still be made aware of them to increase overall safety.
Prevention Tips & Resources
Prevention Tips
No action or inaction by a crime survivor makes that person responsible for their victimization. Perpetrators are responsible for their crimes and their effects. The following suggestions may help reduce the possibility of you experiencing such a crime, and/or enhance opportunities to receive prompt assistance.
- Report anything you perceive to be suspicious activity immediately; see something, say something.
- Secure spaces that are unoccupied to reduce the risk of someone taking advantage of a vulnerable situation.
- Lock your door when away from your room or house, or while you are sleeping to reduce the risk of criminal activity.
- Take note of situations that seem odd or out of the ordinary and report them to the Campus Safety office if you live on campus (901-843-3880) or the Memphis Police Department (911) if you live off campus.
Resources Available
- For students, personal counseling and other support services are available through Student Counseling Services by phone (901) 843-3128 or by email at counseling@rhodes.edu. March 23, 2025-Campus Safety Notice-Weather Alert
Information:
I write to alert you to potential severe weather today, Sunday, March 23, 2025. The National Weather Service issued a Tornado Watch until 11:00 p.m. for Shelby County.
In the event of a tornado warning, civil defense sirens will sound, and you are advised to take appropriate shelter immediately. You should immediately move to the lowest floor or most interior part of your building. Avoid exterior walls, windows and doors. Put as many walls as you can between you and the outside. Cover yourself for safety.
As a reminder of tornado safety information, a TORNADO WATCH is issued when conditions are very favorable, and a tornado is possible in the near future. A TORNADO WARNING is issued when a tornado has been sighted, indicated by radar, or may strike in the vicinity of our area. Nighttime tornados are particularly dangerous.
Please be advised that during inclement weather you should anticipate wet floors and stairwells. Please exercise caution when moving around in the buildings.
When possible, Rhodes Campus Safety will send an emergency RhodesAlert when a Tornado Warning is issued for campus. You will likely hear tornado sirens before a RhodesAlert is issued. If possible, Rhodes Campus Safety will issue an all-clear when conditions allow.
Students living off campus should identify the safe space in their homes. The National Weather Service provides helpful information on tornado preparedness.
If you have questions about emergency procedures, please contact Campus Safety at (901) 843-3880.
