Turn Compassion into Action

Go Beyond Impact

You believe in making the world a better place. Actually, you do more than believe it—you live it. At Rhodes, we share that commitment, and back it up with action. With a fierce devotion to equity, an unwavering focus on the common good, and a demonstrated belief that new ideas and new approaches can bring better results for all, a Rhodes education puts you on a path to making an even more meaningful contribution to the world.

Be Transformed by Community

Rhodes is a tight-knit school with an amazing advantage: we are in Memphis. Our heart is with and for this city, and it shows. More than 80 percent of Rhodes students are engaged in meaningful work across our city, which is the reason Rhodes College ranked 11th for “Students Most Engaged in Community Service” by the Princeton Review. What you learn in your courses, apply in your research, and live out in your internships will become real, right here. You will have the chance to transform this place—and Memphis will transform you, too.

Get Ready to Break Conventions

We focus on what works, not what’s common. At Rhodes, you’ll do more than community service: you’ll reach across cultural, racial, and economic barriers to seek lasting solutions for a more equitable world. You’ll do more than academic research: you’ll attend national meetings, present in seminars, and publish in peer-reviewed journals. You’ll do more than pick a major: you’ll choose from a long list of hands-on fellowships, find a mentor who invests time and heart into guiding your path, and discover a passion that will fuel the rest of your life.

Make a Better Tomorrow

Rhodes students are already making an impact on the world. Jacob Fontaine ’21 is editor-in-chief for The Bridge, a newspaper founded and run by Rhodes students that is sold on the streets by Memphians experiencing homelessness. They earn income by keeping the full profit from each sale. “I think it is unique to be surrounded by such a large number of people who dedicate such a great amount of time to The Bridge every month. It is really illustrative of Rhodes students in general, who are consistently trying to find a way to get involved, in meaningful ways,” says Fontaine. You’ll find a community at Rhodes that cares as much as you do, and helps you become the change-agent you were made to be.
