Computer Science (new)

Computer Science at Rhodes invites students to explore technology, computation, and algorithmic thinking within the breadth of a liberal arts education. The Bachelor of Science in Computer Science pairs a rigorous curriculum with a collaborative, student-centered culture, blending theory and practice so graduates are prepared for careers in industry and advanced study.

Students develop enduring skills in reasoning, design, problem-solving, and communication while applying them to real systems and real challenges. Coursework also engages emerging tools, including AI agents and large language models, with an emphasis on evaluating them critically and building software that is robust, reliable, and maintainable. Through close faculty mentorship, research, internships, student organizations, study abroad, competitions, and community engagement, students learn to think computationally and use technology to make a difference.

  • Within five years of graduation, more than 90 percent of Computer Science majors are employed or enrolled in graduate school.
  • Recent graduates have joined organizations including Amazon, Google, International Paper, Real Capital Analytics, Cook Systems International, Summit Engineering, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, FedEx, Acxiom, IBM, The Vanguard Group, Information Systems Consultants, Memphis-Shelby County Schools, AutoZone, and ARGO Data Resource Corporation.
  • Graduates have pursued master’s and doctoral degrees at institutions including Brown University, the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Duke University, Georgia Tech, Northeastern University, the University of North Carolina, the University of Texas, the University of Utah, and Vanderbilt University.
  • Students work alongside faculty through departmental summer research fellowships and may participate in Research Experiences for Undergraduates across the country or the St. Jude Summer Plus program.
  • Internships with Memphis-area companies and organizations give students opportunities to apply classroom learning and build professional connections.
  • Student-run organizations, programming competitions, and events such as the department’s Game Jam provide experience in collaboration, design, development, and presenting completed work.
  • Study-abroad opportunities allow students to explore computing in an international context while continuing progress toward the major.
  • Department resources—including high-performance computing, virtual reality and motion-capture facilities, peer tutoring, and a student lounge—support experimentation, collaboration, and student success.
