Bakewell Appointed Inaugural Endowed Visiting Professor in Greece
Dr. Geoff Bakewell will be spending the next three years on location in Athens, Greece, as the Brian D. Joseph Endowed Chair in Classics at the study abroad program, College Year in Athens. This is an incredible honor and Global Rhodes could not be more pleased to have our esteemed colleague represent the College at such a top-tier destination for study abroad students.
Newstok Awarded Grant from the State Research Agency of Spain
Dr. Scott Newstock will be returning to Murcia, Spain to research several historical events in English language development. This work is made possible by a four-year grant he has been awarded by the State Research Agency of Spain. As a renowned Shakespeare scholar, Dr. Newstock’s upcoming research will continue to position Rhodes College in the forefront of academic circles in the humanities.
Gottlieb Receives Second Fulbright Scholar Award
Dr. Eric Gottlieb continues Rhodes College’s reputation as a top Fulbright sending institution by being awarded a three-month teaching and researching Fulbright in the beautiful city of Koper, Slovenia at the University of Primorska.
Dr. Michael LaRosa: A Leading Voice on Latin American History and U.S. Relations
Dr. Michael LaRosa, associate professor of history at Rhodes College, is a leading expert on Latin American history and culture. His latest book, co-written with Rhodes alumnus Bryce Ashby, is titled Immigration, Policy and the People of Latin America: Seven Sending Nations.
This book examines the migration of Latin America’s inhabitants to the United States through case studies from seven nations—Colombia, Cuba, Haiti, Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico, and Venezuela. Rhodes students also contributed to some of the chapters.

Buckman International Curricular Development Grants
The Buckman International Curricular Development Grants enable faculty members to travel internationally in pursuit of new and innovative approaches in education abroad and internationalization. We fund up to ten grants each year; awards are up to $5,000 each and cover expenses such as air travel, visas, meals, housing, immunizations, entrances to points of interest, and other items necessary for site familiarization, research, collaboration with local partners, and more. Proposals may include, but are not limited to, projects such as:
- Creating a new international program (summer or semester)
- Creating a new course with significant attention to areas of study outside the US
- Investigating potential linkages between departmental courses and the UN Sustainable Development Goals or similar frameworks/systems
- Updating an existing course or program to expand global content or to explore the intersection(s) of communities with pressing social or world issues

Amplify Your Work Through Collaboration
Here is a summary of global engagement opportunities for faculty (this is not an exhaustive list):
- Teaching:
- Developing and leading summer or semester programs abroad and away
- Teaching in universities abroad
- Engaging in Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) projects
- Internationalizing your courses and curriculum
- Researching: Conducting scholarly work abroad leading to publications, presentations, and international collaboration.
- Traveling: If your work plans include traveling internationally to teach, research, or attend a conference, link that trip with other global initiatives for the College, such as:
- Supporting Admissions’ recruitment efforts and Alumni’s development plans by meeting with prospective students and alumni in your path. (Contact Lauren Sefton ’03 and Mimi Salazar ’96 P ’26, respectively).
- Taking current study abroad students out for coffee while you’re visiting their city (Contact Elin Ovrebo).
