Director of International Programs
Erin Hillis (Director of International Programs, PDSO) has been with Rhodes College since June 2004. She received her PhD in Applied Linguistics from The University of Memphis and holds a BA in Linguistics (1998) and an MA in English as a Second Language (2000) from The University of Memphis. She is responsible for all aspects of international education at the college, including education abroad/away, faculty-led program development, international student services, and immigration regulatory compliance. Additionally, she is an adjunct member of the faculty, offering a year-long course, "Teaching English as a Foreign Language," in the Educational Studies department.
Dr. Hillis routinely presents for national conferences on topics such as diversity in study abroad, LGBTQ issues in international education, academic ethics across cultures, and international student academic support. Her research areas of interest include LGBTQ domestic and international student issues, issues related to underrepresented student populations and study abroad, second language acquisition, and linguistic challenges faced by international students at US institutions.
Currently, Dr. Hillis engages in service to the college as the Past Chair of the LGBTQ Working Group. Outside of Rhodes, Dr. Hillis is a Past Chair for NAFSA Region VII, has served in multiple roles within both the Tennessee Association of International Educators and Study Tennessee, and is a member of the Board of Directors for Literacy Mid-South, a nonprofit organization providing literacy resources for learners of all ages.
