Update: July 8, 2020
We continue to monitor the conditions in Memphis. Large social gatherings are limited through the end of August. Updates will be posted on this page as they become available. Until we can gather safely to celebrate the Class of 2020, please stay safe and healthy.
A Message from President Hass Regarding Commencement - March 12, 2020
Dear Seniors and Families,
This has been a difficult and traumatic 24 hours for everyone. While our plan to confront COVID-19 will affect all members of our community, as seniors the Class of 2020 will be facing special sacrifices.
Many of you have asked about Commencement and I am writing to share the information we have now.
At this point, Commencement has not been cancelled.
We are delaying any decision in hopes the situation will improve by semester’s end. If we can find a safe way to host Commencement on campus, we will absolutely do so.
We begin planning for our Commencement ceremony and weekend events a year ahead of time. Right now, the College Events team is continuing to plan for the ceremony and weekend events. I have asked RSG to provide me with the names of seniors who can serve in an advisory capacity as we make decisions.
I know there are challenges with deferring this decision, but we do so in the hopes that we can safely proceed as planned. We will give you a status update by April 1st, if we have new information before that date, we will share it with you.
My heart goes out to all of you. This is certainly not what any of us envisioned for the remaining weeks of our seniors’ college career. But we are committed to you and to finding ways to celebrate your accomplishments.
