The Southwestern Review is the college’s literary journal produced by Rhodes students, and its goal is to publish work—including literature and art—that inspires original thought, community-building, and support for creative expression. Although it has changed names at times, the publication has existed for decades.
The launch party for the 2024 edition will be Tuesday, April 16, at 5:30 p.m. in Hardie Auditorium and will include music, readings, food, and copies of the new issue.
Through the two-semester course (English 206 and English 207) Creative Publishing taught by Prof. Caki Wilkinson, students study the history of literary magazine publishing in the United States and conduct a survey of contemporary magazines and topics in literary publishing. Building on this research, students then produce The Southwestern Review, including reading submissions, editing and designing the magazine, developing publicity materials, and planning the campus launch.
