Saylor Tettleton ’22 will be studying in Germany for one year as a Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) Fellow. She is one of only 75 Americans awarded the competitive fellowship, which is funded by the German Bundestag and U.S. Department of State and provides American and German young professionals the opportunity to spend one year in each other’s country studying, interning, and living with hosts on a cultural immersion program.
The program began this month, and participants receive intensive German language training; attend one semester of classes in one’s academic or career field at a university, technical, or professional school; and complete a three- to five-month internship.
Tettleton graduated from Rhodes in May with a bachelor’s degree in educational studies and is interested in learning more about educational systems in Germany over the next year. She plans to teach at the elementary school level when returning to the U.S.
“I was unable to study abroad in Germany due to COVID-19, and so I was determined to find a way to put my German studying at Rhodes to use while working and learning in my chosen field of teaching,” says Tettleton. “I didn’t even know a program like this existed until a Rhodes professor recommended it. I prepared my resume and did mock interview sessions with Rhodes Career Services to put my best foot forward in the application process. I am so excited for the coming year as a citizen diplomat in Germany!”
