Rhodes Named a Presidential Award Finalist for Community Service

Rhodes College has been named a finalist for the President’s Award for General Community Service. This nationwide designation is part of the 2014 President′s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll and recognizes the college and its students for commitment to volunteer service.

Only 16 institutions of higher education in the country were selected as finalists. The President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll designation is the highest federal recognition an institution can receive for its commitment to community, service-learning, and civic engagement.

The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) has administered the award since 2006 in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, as well as the American Council on Education, Campus Compact, and the Interfaith Youth Core.

More than 80 percent of Rhodes students participate in service, with many choosing Rhodes because of the college’s strong support for connecting the lessons of the classroom to the community.
