Rhodes Football Players Join Special Olympics Athletes for Scrimmage on Oct. 6

Rhodes football players will join 30 to 40 athletes of Special Olympics of Greater Memphis for a demonstration of gridiron skills Sunday, Oct. 6, at Crain Field on campus. Kickoff is at 3 p.m.

Free and open to the public, the football scrimmage is presented by the Rhodes Lynx Club, a weekly program founded in 2011 and run by Rhodes students. Lynx Club takes place every Thursday night in the gym on campus where groups compete in recreational sports practices and scrimmages.

“As with all Special Olympics events, we welcome anyone who would like to cheer on the athletes as they compete in a unified recreational game,” says Katelyn Dagen ’15, Lynx Club coordinator.

According to its mission, Special Olympics of Greater Memphis provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

“The members of Lynx Club are grateful to be a part of a campus community that is eager to support the Special Olympics athletes of Memphis,” adds Dagen. “This particular event is evidence of the growing involvement between Lynx Club and Rhodes Varsity athletics, and we look forward to future events between the two.”
