Adiha Khan, second-year dental student at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC), and a 2013 Rhodes alumna, won the Basic Science Research Award at the Hinman Student Research Symposium held in the fall at The Peabody Hotel in Memphis.

Sponsored by UTHSC’s College of Dentistry and the Hinman Dental Society, the symposium featured oral and poster presentations of research projects by dental students and graduate students from schools across the nation.

Khan’s project evaluated the ability of dental stem cells to be converted for possible use in regeneration of tooth structures. The project was directed by Dr. George “T. J.” Huang, professor and director for Stem Cells and Regenerative Therapies at the UTHSC College of Dentistry.

Khan earned a B.S. in biology from Rhodes in 2013. While a student, she worked on the snake parasite project in the lab of Prof. Laura Luque de Johnson and presented her research at the American Society of Parasitology conference in Anchorage, Alaska. She also served as president of the Rhodes chapter of Tri-Beta Honor Society.
