The Curb Institute welcomes Isabel González Whitaker as the 2018-2019 Curb Visiting Scholar in the Arts. An in-demand journalist and editor, González Whitaker has written important pieces examining the intersections between popular culture and important cultural moments, which will be the subject of her talk.

The Sun Ra Arkestra in Concert

The pioneering Afrofuturist jazz ensemble will perform live on the Rhodes College campus, also featuring the Rhodes Jazz Band. Continuing the legacy of Sun Ra, the Arkestra is under the direction of original member Marshall Allen, who recently celebrated his 94th birthday. Earlier that week, on Tuesday 10/23 at 6:00 in Blount Auditorium, the Turley Memphis Center will host a panel in conjunction with the concert titled “Memphis Afro-Futurism and Speculative Fiction.”

Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison: A Film Screening and Conversation with Michael Streissguth

A part of Indie Memphis Nights Weekly Film Series. Directed and produced by Bestor Cram, Written and produced by Michael Streissguth.

Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison explores the historical context of Johnny Cash’s seminal concert album, “Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison” on the occasion of its 50th anniversary. Based on writer Michael Streissguth’s acclaimed book Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison: The Making of a Masterpiece, the program weaves together compelling interviews with archival photography to evoke the spirit of that momentous day on Jan. 13, 1968 when Johnny Cash appeared on stage at Folsom Prison and re-imagined his destiny. Participants include: Rosanne Cash, band member Marty Stuart, former inmate Millard Dedmon, and relatives of inmate/singer Glen Sherley, who famously wrote “Greystone Chapel” for Cash.

Rhodes Night at the Levitt Shell featuring Joyce Cobb: A Celebration of Jazz and Community

Located at The Levitt Shell in Overton Park. Acts include Joyce Cobb, the Rhodes Faculty Players, the Rhodes Jazz Band, and the Stax Academy Jazz Ensemble. Free and Open to the Public.

This event is a part of Rhodes Family Weekend. Alumni Relations and the Memphis Chapter are hosting a VIP party on top of the hill featuring appetizers and refreshments beginning at 6:00 p.m. The cost is $10 for those who pre-register and $15 at the door. Rhodes College at Levitt Shell Featuring Dee Dee Bridgewater

    the evening features a performance by the incomparable Dee Dee
    Bridgewater, returning to her Memphis roots. Bridgewater is a
    three-time Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter, Tony
    Award-winning stage actress, and a 2017 NEA Jazz Master. The
    concert is free and begins at 7:00 p.m. 

The Rhodes Jazz Band will perform beginning at 6:00 p.m. for early-comers and the
    Rhodes Chapter of Memphis will host a VIP reception for the Rhodes Community as part of Family Weekend.
