The Rhodes College Observatory will be open to the public for viewing of the stars, planets, and other celestial objects. The theme will be stars and star clusters--the jewels of the night sky! Weather predictions are not promising at this time, so please check back for updates.The event is free and open to the public, but cancelled if skies are cloudy.

Theme of the Night: Messier Objects Please join us, weather permitting, for a night under the stars, planets, nebula, and galaxies.

The Messier objects are a set of 110 astronomical objects catalogued by the French astronomer Charles Messier in his "Catalogue des Nébuleuses et des Amas d'Étoiles", 

Saturday, Feb. 18, 7-9pm on the 6th floor of Rhodes Tower.

Free and open to the public, but cancelled if cloudy.

The Rhodes Physics Department is proud to host monthly open houses for students, faculty, and the general public. Specific objects visible vary according to the season, but some favorites are the Moon, Saturn, Jupiter, the Orion Nebula, the Perseus Double Cluster, and the Andromeda Galaxy. Several telescopes and observatory docents will be available to show these, and other, astronomical objects. Open houses are free and all are welcome to attend.

The Physics Department invites you to celebrate the full Moon at an observing session this Saturday. A brief presentation will explain the meaning of “supermoon” and why we observe lunar phases. The event is free and open to the public.

Free and open to the public! There will be a brief presentation on meteor showers, and the observatory and observing deck will be open for visitors to enjoy views of Saturn, Mars, the Moon, and other celestial delights.

Astronomy Observing Night

Come to the astronomy observing night at Rhodes College. Friday April 8th from 7:30-9:30pm (6th floor Rhodes Tower). A short lecture will be given about galaxies at 7:45pm and 8:45pm. Hands-on activities for the children are included throughout the night. Viewing highlights include multiple galaxies and Jupiter.

Cancelled due to cloudy/rainy weather. Next astronomy observing night will be April 8th.

 

Come to the astronomy observing night at Rhodes College. Friday March 18th from 7-9pm (6th floor Rhodes Tower). A short lecture will be given about the planet Jupiter at 7:15pm and 8:15pm. Viewing highlights include Jupiter and the 4 Galilean moons of Jupiter. Look through both the 8-inch and 20-inch telescopes.
