Rhodes College students won awards after presenting their geographic information system (GIS)-based research at Memphis Area Geographic Information Council’s (MAGIC) annual Geospatial Conference held locally in November.

Kathleen Cutting ’23, an environmental sciences major, received the $2,000 GIS Student Scholarship after presenting “The Impact of Agricultural Land Use on Various Lakes in the Midsouth.” Students are judged based on their research proposal and then invited to give a 20-minute presentation at the conference.

Khanh Ton ’23, also an environmental sciences major, participated in the scholarship competition and presented “Reassessment of Bald Head Woods Reserve Following Hurricane Seasons in 2018 and 2019.”

Music major Max Dixon ’23 entered the student map competition and won first place for “How Old Is Evergreen? The Age of Properties in the Evergreen Historic District.” This map was completed as part of Dixon’s GIS-based internship with TLE, an engineering consulting firm in Memphis, TN.

The Memphis Area Geographic Information Council is a consortium of geographic information system (GIS) professionals spanning the public, private, and governmental business sectors.
