Dr. Michael Drompp, professor of history at Rhodes, was presented the 2018 Jameson M. Jones Award for Outstanding Faculty Service at the college’s Opening Convocation Aug. 17. The program marked the start of the college’s 170th session.
The Jameson M. Jones Award for Outstanding Faculty Service honors a current faculty member who has established an outstanding record of service to the college. It is named in memory of Dr. Jameson M. Jones ’36, who served as the college’s chief academic officer for more than 15 years. Dr. Milton Moreland, provost and vice president for academic affairs, presented the award at the Opening Convocation.
During a career at Rhodes that spans nearly 30 years, Drompp has served the college in a wide variety of capacities, including serving as chair of the history department for eight years and as chief academic officer for six years. Mentoring and support for new faculty, increased faculty diversity, policy changes benefitting the Rhodes LGBTQ community, the creation of the Asian Studies and Chinese Studies programs, and an emphasis on postgraduate opportunities and international education are among the initiatives Drompp is commended for by nominators.
“He has always brought a marvelous combination of intelligence, sensitive understanding, and diplomacy,” wrote one colleague. “His accomplishments have created a true legacy that will remain at Rhodes long after his time at the college.”
