Rhodes Alumna and Athlete Lucia Colbert Is a World Champion

Rhodes alumna Lucia Colbert ’81 recently won her age group in the 2012 XTERRA World Championship. The race, which took place in Hawaii, is described as “The world’s premier off-road triathlon, combining a 1.5-kilometer (1-mile) rough water swim, a 30.4-kilometer (18.89-miles) mountain bike and a 9.5-kilometer (5.9 miles) trail run best described as a tropical roller-coaster ride through pineapple fields and forests.”

At Rhodes, Colbert majored in art and played on the women′s tennis team. In 1980, she was the college’s first women’s tennis player to qualify for the National Women’s Collegiate Tennis Tournament, and in 2000, she was inducted into the Rhodes Athletics Hall of Fame. She also was named Female Athlete of the Millennium by The Commercial Appeal.

Colbert has competed in hundreds of triathlons and continues to train daily.
