New York Times Features Memphis Hot Spots Owned by Rhodes Alums

The New York Times recently featured Memphis in an article about the city’s development in blighted areas. Three of the hot spots featured are owned by Rhodes College alumni Taylor Berger '02 and John Planchon '02. 

"Memphis has seen $13 billion in over 250 revitalization projects in the past four years, according to Cushman & Wakefield/Commercial Advisors, the commercial real estate services company. Most of these projects are spearheaded by local entrepreneurs who see the potential in turning downtrodden sites into spaces that add social value.

The entrepreneurs behind Loflin Yards, John Planchon and his business partner, Taylor Berger, have made a living transforming forsaken buildings into popular bars and restaurants.

One year after opening Loflin Yard the duo launched Railgarten, an even bigger venture farther east in midtown Memphis. The two-acre property housed a defunct ice factory.”

Most recently, the Memphis Chapter of Rhodes Alumni hosted an event for the Class of 2018 at Loflin Yard during Senior Week. 

Planchon is the husband of Jade Planchon '05, an instructor of finance in Rhodes’ business department. 

The article goes on to mention the development of the Crosstown Concourse, which is just minutes away from the Rhodes campus in Midtown, and is a favorite spot for many current students, faculty, and staff.
