In Biology, faculty are as dedicated to their research programs as they are to teaching.  In fact, the two go hand-in-hand.  Faculty research is driven by curiosity and the desire to contribute new knowledge to the various disciplines within biology.  It is also a way in which faculty engage students in the process of becoming biologists so that students may make their own unique contributions.  Student research has obvious benefits for students wanting to attend graduate school, but even those entering the health professions and other careers benefit from having a greater understanding of how the theoretical foundations are laid for practical applications of biological knowledge.
