A native Memphian, Keva Duckett graduated from Rhodes College in 2001, where she studied history and business. When making her college decision, Keva considered both in-state and out-of-state colleges and universities, but none could measure up to the jewel she found in Rhodes, located in the heart of her hometown. “I visited other schools, but wanted to find out what was really ‘behind the gates’ at Rhodes. In high school, I attended workshops and camps at the college, which first sparked my interest. As a junior in high school, I then had the opportunity to explore what the school really had to offer. Needless to say, I fell in love!”
As a student, Keva participated in cultural organizations such as the Black Student Association and assisted with programming under the umbrella of Multicultural Affairs. She was a member of the Rhodes College Dance Team and participated in Greek life. Keva also volunteered with the Kinney Program, a student-led service-learning organization on campus. As a volunteer, Keva spent time tutoring 5th graders in reading and math at a local middle school. “As a volunteer, this experience not only gave me the opportunity to help students that were not performing at grade level, but to teach study skills that would have a lifelong impact. It was truly an amazing experience!”
Keva also completed her senior internship with the Metropolitan Inter-Faith Association’s (MIFA) Opportunity Banc Program. She worked with low income families, primarily women, who wanted to become entrepreneurs, to supplement their current incomes. “Rhodes offers so many opportunities to become essential, in work, in class, and in the community. Choosing Rhodes allowed me to see Memphis through a different lens; one that provides an immeasurable level of diversity and culture, one that I carry with me always.”
Professionally, Keva participated in the New Memphis Institute’s Fellows Program and also completed the City of Memphis Managers and Leaders program.
In her spare time, Keva serves as a leader in her church’s liturgical dance ministry. She also enjoys Grizzlies games, spending time with family and friends, movies, reading, and Zumba!
