Opening Convocation marks the beginning of the academic year and the entry of the new class into the Rhodes community. Parents and families are encouraged to attend the first official academic event of their student’s career at Rhodes.

Drop in to meet Chaplain Beatrix and chat about ways to nourish your religious and spiritual life. Chaplain Beatrix is also available at weilb@rhodes.edu and can provide emotional and spiritual support, confidential conversation, pep talks, answers to questions you don't know who else to ask, and virtual Memphis-based religious service recommendations.

Eric Dittelman: Virtual Mind Reader (Evening Social)

Often known by just his surname, Dittelman combines amazing mind reading with stand-up and improv comedy.  In 2012, he blew audiences away as the first-ever mind reader on NBC’s America’s Got Talent, where he was a season 7 semi-finalist and judges’ favorite. He has since appeared on EllenLive with Kelly and Ryan, and Penn & Teller: Fool Us, where Penn called his act “bordering on genius.” He’s also been featured in Entertainment Weekly, Rolling Stone, and even The National Enquirer.

Language Placement Exam

Faculty will be available to provide information about curricular and co-curricular opportunities for language study and answer any of your questions about online placement results. During this session, follow-up testing will be discussed and scheduled if you scored at the 202 level or above on the online placement exam in German, Russian, French, or Spanish. Chinese, Greek, Hebrew, and Latin exams will be administered or placement recommendations clarified

Search Plenary Session

If you are enrolled in Humanities 101, you will learn more about the first course in the three-semester Search sequence. Three professors will discuss the course’s origins, strategies for reading canonical Western texts, and peoples and perspectives that have been historically excluded from this tradition.

Health Professions Info Session

This is a mandatory first meeting for anyone interested in a health profession or veterinary medicine (medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, physician assistant, physical therapy, occupational therapy, optometry, public health, veterinary medicine and any other clinical health career other than clinical psychology). College Trivia Nerds bring us four themed trivia games, and YOU get to choose! Which theme will you take on: Pop Culture, Disney, Movies or The Office? Each theme will be first-come, first-served, with a maximum of 120 students each, so be sure to get there on time.

Students will discuss the importance of campus involvement and how it contributes to the overall mission of the college. In addition, orientation leaders will assist students in preparing for their first day of classes.
