Derek King ’10 recently served as a panelist in the General Education session of the 51st National Convention of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). He was the only student on the panel which addressed the theme: “The Challenges Involved in Educating the African American Student Today and Tomorrow.”

Having taught English to 10th graders at the Grizzlies Academy and leadership skills to middle school students at Memphis University School (MUS), King compared and contrasted the effects of expectations and environment on student motivation and achievement. He also taught public speaking and leadership at MUS.

King is a psychology major from Adamsville, AL. He says his own experiences in Fairfield City Schools (Birmingham area) and at Rhodes has helped him relate to various youth. “To be an effective teacher, you truly have to care for the individual.” King also says he has experienced that kind of relational teaching at Rhodes.
