Utkov ’10 To Present Chemistry Research at International Conference in Finland

Publication Date: 6/19/2009

Chemistry Professor Mauricio Cafiero and Hunter Utkov ’10 will attend the Thirteenth Annual International Congress of Quantum Chemistry in Helsinki, Finland, June 22-26.

Utkov, who has been working with Cafiero for the last year, will present her work, “Functional Group Based Design of Novel Cholesterol Moderating Drugs Using Ab Initio and DFT methods.” She has been using quantum mechanics and molecular simulations to design new, and potentially more effective statin drugs for the lowering of blood cholesterol levels.

Utkov has presented parts of this work at the American Chemical Society national conference held in Salt Lake City, Utah in March and at the Undergraduate Chemistry Conference held at The University of Memphis in February.

This trip is funded in part by a Spence Wilson International Travel Grant.
