Publication Date: 2/13/2009

The Student Counseling Center at Rhodes is bringing "The Century Project" to campus February 23-27. Open to the Memphis public, a reception will be held February 23 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in Hyde Hall of the Burrow Refectory.

"The Century Project" is a chronological series of nude photographic portraits of more than 100 women and girls from the moment of birth to nearly 100 years of age. It aims to reshape the notion of beauty and challenge common perceptions. Frank Cordell, who has been a photographer for magazines such as Life and Newsweek, has been working on the project for nearly 25 years.

The exhibition comprises women of many ages, shapes, sizes, and life experiences, many accompanied by statements written by the women. In its entirety, the project consists of an exhibit, a book titled Bodies and Souls: The Century Project, and a Web site.

The book will be available at the reception and throughout the week in the Rhodes Bookstore.

Cosponsors of the exhibition are Student Affairs at Rhodes, Student Health Center, the Rhodes Activities Board, Residence Life, Gay Straight Alliance, Women’s Center, Art Department, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Psychology Department, and Eating Disorders Coalition of Tennessee.
