Registry Pages Added to Zion Cemetery Project

Publication Date: 12/4/2008

New ledger images have been added to the Zion Cemetery Project Web site hosted and managed by Rhodes College. Founded in 1876 and located on South Parkway, Zion Cemetery is the oldest African American cemetery in Memphis. Various individuals and organizations have assisted in its restoration.

Rhodes student Catherine Lawson photographed each page in the cemetery’s registry, and Stacy Pennington from Information Technology Services posted the pages in a way that when a viewer searches for a record of an individual, the viewer can see the name as it appears in its original context.  View an example

According to Rhodes religious studies professor Milton Moreland who serves on the Zion Cemetery Project board, there are plans to add map material to allow viewers to see where a grave is located and to provide an up-close photo of a gravestone.
