Evan Somers ’09 and Kelsie Persaud ’10 recently participated in Baptist Memorial Health Care Corporation’s Summer Scholar Program, a six-week enrichment program for students interested in pursuing a career in the medical field.

Somers is an economics and chemistry double major from Indianapolis, Ind., and Persaud is a biology major from Little Rock, Ark.

Every morning and afternoon, Somers and Persaud would visit a different part of the hospital, observing physicians, nurses, physical therapists, health administrators and clinicians.

For Persaud, the program finalized her decision to pursue a career as a doctor.  For Somers, the program made him “even more excited to continue my path of becoming a physician.”

One of the doctors Somers and Persaud shadowed was a Rhodes alumnus, Dr. Stephen Threlkeld ’86, who specializes in infectious disease.  Dr. Threlkeld was in the process of adopting an electronic charting system, giving Somers and Persaud the opportunity to discuss with him the role of technology in both hospitals and a private practice.
