Rhodes senior Rachel Thompson recently participated in a week-long internship for GEICO, Inc., in Washington, D.C.

Working in the Internet Business Unit, Thompson evaluated the overall effectiveness of GEICO’s claims-tracking Web site by examining four areas: customer usability, efficiency, organization of information and visual aesthetics. After assessing the Web site, Thompson compiled her findings into a presentation for upper-level claims tracking specialists at GEICO’s Claims Tracking Conference.

The internship offered Thompson a unique hands-on experience that she can easily translate into skills for upper-level jobs.

Thompson became interested in Web site development from her experiences in the Rhodes Student Associates Program. As the student associate for the British Studies at Oxford program, Thompson built the program’s Web site from the ground up. “I knew how to use HTML, but everything else I learned on the job,” says Thompson. During her tenure, she developed skills in design and graphics programs and content organization as well as refining her knowledge of coding.

Currently, Thompson is a student associate for Rhodes’ Communications Office where she has undertaken more complex tasks such as information architecture, evaluating site usability, traffic statistics and marketing strategies and managing multiple Web sites at once. “Without the experience gained from my two RSA positions, there’s no way I would have gotten the internship,” confesses Thompson who also was able to apply skills learned as a studio art major at Rhodes.

“GEICO wanted a student who would offer a fresh perspective on the site layout in terms of the color palette, graphics placement and other factors that would make the site visually pleasing for the customer,” says Thompson. Overall, the internship offered valuable insights and information that Thompson plans to use in graduate opportunities and beyond.

Thompson first heard about the GEICO internship through Rhodes’ Career Services department. For more information about Career Services or to browse the collection of available internship opportunities, please visit the Career Services Web site.
