Every Saturday morning Rhodes students read stories in Spanish and do craft projects with children between the ages of 3 and 10. Students practice Spanish, reach out to the broader community, and gain a better understanding of Latino cultures.  

Off Campus

Big Brothers, Big Sisters – Apply online at bbbs.org

Big Brothers Big Sisters is a mentoring organization that matches adult (18+) volunteers with younger children. There are a disproportionate number of Hispanic children enrolled in the program in need of mentors.

Bridges – Apply online at www.bridgesusa.org/corpsBridges is looking for both volunteers and interns to help with variety of tasks including volunteer management, administrative tasks, and fundraising. All volunteers and interns attend leadership-training sessions

Caritas Village – Contact Onie Johns at oniejohns1@gmail.comCaritas Village is a non-profit that works to bring together people of different communities. Their services include: after-school arts and theater programs, free walk-in medical clinic, and ESL tutoring. Volunteers are needed to assist with each of these programs; Spanish-speaking volunteers are also needed to interpret.

CASA Memphis – Apply online at exchangeclub.net/casavolunteer 
Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs) provide a voice for children in the court systems as a result of abuse or neglect. Advocates are all volunteers aged 21 years and older. They investigate cases of abuse and neglect and prepare a court report with recommendations that reflect the best interests of the child. Bilingual advocates or those with strong Spanish skills will likely be assigned to cases involving Latino children.

Cazateatro is Memphis’ only bilingual theater company. They are in need of volunteers for acting, backstage and front-of-house support for performances, and promotion and development. Acting is entirely in Spanish and those helping with promotion or at the theater will need a good command of the language.

Family Safety Center – Contact vernetta@familysafetycenter.org 
The Family Safety Center provides a safe place for victims of domestic violence, counseling and visitation services for children, and training for advocates. They seek volunteers to help at the front desk and bilingual volunteers to help with surveys completed by Spanish-speaking clients.

La Prensa Latina - Contact Vivian Adamson at vivian@laprensalatina.comLa Prensa Latina is Memphis’ only bilingual newspaper, which reports on local Hispanic events and organizations. They are seeking student volunteers or interns fluent in Spanish.

Latino Memphis – apply online at latinomemphis.orgLatino Memphis accepts both Spanish speaking and non-Spanish speaking volunteers for a wide variety of projects, including working in the office and volunteering at special events.

Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition (TIRRC) – Contact Karla Vazquez at KarlaV@tnimmigrant.orgTIRRC works to empower refugees and immigrants through community development and organizing. Interns will attend and help organize community events and work closely with other immigrant rights advocates. Fluency in Spanish is preferred but not required.

Workers Interfaith Network (WIN)www.workersinterfaithnetwork.orgWIN campaigns for the rights of workers, including advocating for fair wages and working to stop wage theft and improve working conditions. Volunteers and interns are needed to help perform administrative tasks, plan rallies and meetings, and carry out other activities.

YWCA Immigrant Women’s Services (IWS) – Contact Ines Negrette at inegrette@memphisywca.orgThe YWCA is a service for victims of domestic violence. Immigrant Women’s Services advocate for non-English speaking and/or immigrant victims. They need volunteers with strong Spanish skills to help with administrative tasks, perform intakes for new clients, and occasionally translate testimonies and accompany clients to court or government offices.
