The Writing Is On the Wall

Murals, writing, and graffiti art can be found on walls throughout the city of Memphis. Some of these artistic masterpieces are community projects to help brighten the city, others are simply to show love. Here are our five top walls.

1. The non-profit program UrbanArt has partnered with the City of Memphis to paint murals all around the city around the theme “I Love Memphis.” This popular mural in Cooper Young was painted on a wall that was generously donated by the business owner of the building.

2. The mural found in Overton Square on the side of  Bari Ristorante is part of a public art project to redevelop the area. The mural was painted by David Lynch and depicts many of the iconic Overton Square buildings.

3.The mural found on the side of the gas station at North Tucker and Poplar right across from Overton Park. The project was created by students at the Memphis College of Art.

4. The Lyric Wall on South Main is a part of a public art project to enhance the city’s landscape. Memphis is mentioned in more than 800 recorded and distributed songs, which is more than any other city in the world!

5.And speaking of music, people come from all over the world to write messages to Elvis on the wall that surrounds Graceland’s grounds. While some messages ask for Elvis’s blessings, others simply express the love that visitors have for him.
