1. McCoy Theatre
Rhodes’ very own theatre is a great way to experience the arts without even stepping outside of Rhodes’ gates. You’re guaranteed to see a top-notch performance—our theater department was recently awarded nine Ostrander awards for excellence in local theater. As far as ticket prices go, it can’t be beat: a seat is never above $20 and is sometimes even free. For added entertainment, stop by the theatre at night: legend says it’s haunted.
2. The Orpheum Theatre: Boasting shows like Phantom of the Opera andLes Miserables, students flock to the Orpheum to experience true Memphis entertainment. And seriously—what better place to see Memphis: the Musicalthan Memphis itself? The Center for Outreach in the Development of the Arts at Rhodes (CODA) often sells $5 Orpheum tickets.
3. Playhouse on the Square: College budget getting you down? No worries! For each of its productions, Playhouse on the Square offers one “pay what you can” night. The 2013-2014 season is already posted online, offering hits such asPeter Pan, The Diary of Anne Frank, and Hairspray.
4. Theatre Memphis: One of the oldest and most successful community theatres in the country, Theatre Memphis never disappoints. From topical shows like Young Frankenstein in October and A Christmas Carol in December to classics such as The Music Man and As You Like It, you’re bound to find a play here for your every mood.
5. Voices of the South: Since 1995, the non-profit company has performed award- winning new plays and adaptations of literature. Located at TheatreSouth in the Cooper-Young District, Voices of the South provides a true glimpse into diverse Southern perspectives.
