Samantha Smith ′14 Offered Writing Internship at Phi Beta Kappa National Office

Rhodes College English major Samantha Smith ‘14 is one of only 20 students nationwide to be offered a writing internship with the national office of the Phi Beta Kappa Society in Washington, D.C. The internship period begins immediately and will continue through June 15, 2013. Smith will be asked to prepare a minimum of six publishable articles for Phi Beta Kappa′s new site for its publication, The Key Reporter. According to Dr. Kelly Gerald, editor of The Key Reporter, fewer than half of applicants were accepted, and Smith′s strong writing samples distinguished her among a competitive applicant pool.

Founded in 1776, Phi Beta Kappa is the nation′s oldest academic honor society. It has chapters at 283 institutions and more than half a million members throughout the country. Its mission is to champion education in the liberal arts and sciences, to recognize academic excellence, and to foster freedom of thought and expression. Rhodes has been home to a Phi Beta Kappa chapter since 1949; the current Secretary of the Society, Dr. John Churchill, is a ′71 graduate of the college

Smith is a 2010 graduate of St. George′s Independent School in Collierville, Tenn.
