Rhodes Students Receive Honors in Math Competition

Two Rhodes teams competed in the international Math Competition in Modeling this semester with team one receiving Honorable Mention and team two judged Meritorious Winners.

“To place this achievement in perspective, 5,636 teams from around the world competed, and only 29 percent received Honorable Mention and only 15 percent are awarded Meritorious Winners,” says Erin N. Bodine, team advisor and assistant professor in the Department of Mathematics & Computer Science.

In the competition, teams of up to three students were given a real-world applied problem and 96 hours to research and propose solutions justified by mathematical models. Rhodes participants included Elysia Hassen ’14, LeAnna Kent ’14, Kevin Starnes ’13, Aditya Biswas, ’15, Shelby Scott ’15.
