Rhodes in partnership with Ballet Memphis and The University of Memphis will present the River Project Symposium/Concert Oct. 3-4, free and open to the public. Join musicians, historians, academics, choreographers, and professional dancers to celebrate the wealth of knowledge and history flowing from the Mississippi River and surrounding region.
The symposium takes place Thursday, Oct. 3, 5- 8 p.m. in Rhodes’ Hardie Auditorium (Palmer Hall) beginning with a reception at 5 p.m. and followed by a panel discussion on topics ranging from the earthquakes that have shaped the towns along the Mississippi River to the music constantly inspired by it plus opportunities for live music and a Ballet Memphis sneak peak performance of River Project 2.
Symposium participants include University of Memphis earthquake researchers, Ballet Memphis dancers, ethnomusicologist David Evans, historian Richard Raichelson, and dancer Julie Niekrasz. Charles Hughes of Rhodes’ Memphis Center will moderate the river and music panel discussion.
The Music of the River concert takes place Friday, Oct. 4, 6-9 p.m. at Crosstown Arts (430 North Cleveland) and features the Last Chance Jug Band, Earlice Taylor, and Marcella and her Lovers.
