Tell the story of how you got to Rhodes College.

I originally checked out Rhodes because my older brother lives in Memphis and he recommended that I check it out. I wasn’t totally sold on the idea of living in Memphis until I got here and realized that Rhodes is just the right fit for me—and, I get the bonus of living really close to my brother.

How have you changed since beginning your studies at Rhodes College?

I am more aware of the issues that are going on in the world today, and more aware of the ways in which I can contribute or aid in efforts to make a change to those issues. I would say that I feel like a more proactive person today than when I entered college.

How did you come to start a bow tie business?

Honestly, it was a bit of an accident. My boyfriend wanted a bow tie, so I spent a lot of time figuring out how to do it, and I was hooked. Developing the perfect bow tie was such a fun and creative process that I couldn’t stop after making just one. So I didn’t! I started the process of creating a business that makes 100% cotton, handmade, customizable bow ties to fit every guy’s fashion needs. It involved a lot of trial and error and is something that I am still working on today.

How exactly do you make a bow tie?

Well, I can’t give you exact details, or I will be out of business! But, roughly, I use a handmade pattern to cut the cotton fabric on the bias. Cutting on the bias, though it consumes more fabric, gives the fabric a certain flow and flexibility, giving the bow tie the perfect look when tied. At this point, I double-line the bow tie, sew in any monogram the customer would like, and then double-stitch each seam for maximum durability. Finally, I sew in a set of buttons across the back of the bow tie that allow the bow tie to be adjusted to fit most neck sizes. However, bow ties can be made in any size! My ultimate goal is to make high-quality custom bow ties at a reasonable price point, so that everyone can express themselves through their style—because “having style” shouldn’t mean breaking the bank.
