Assistant Professor of Anthropology and Sociology - Sociology

The Department of Anthropology and Sociology at Rhodes College invites applications for a tenure-track appointment in Sociology at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning in August 2010. We are seeking an individual with research interests that include race, gender and class, community and urban sociology, and the study of identity formation. Additional areas of specialization are open but might include qualitative research methods, women's health, social justice, or environment and technology. We encourage applications from individuals who are committed to undergraduate teaching, who are engaged in active research programs and interested in mentoring undergraduate researchers, and whose interests go beyond traditional disciplinary and sub-disciplinary boundaries. Teaching load is five courses each academic year. In addition to teaching upper-division courses in their areas of specialization, the successful candidate must be prepared to teach Introductory Sociology, Research Methods, and two of the following: Gender and Society, Racial and Ethnic Identities, Family in Social Context or Urban Social Problems. These courses could include participation in interdisciplinary programs such as African American Studies, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Urban Studies, or Environmental Studies. Ph.D. by August 2010 is expected as well as demonstrated teaching excellence. Candidates from backgrounds typically underrepresented in higher education are strongly encouraged to apply. Salary is competitive, commensurate with qualifications and experience. In addition, faculty development money, travel funds, and an attractive benefits package are included. Assistant Professor of Art – History

The Department of Art at Rhodes College seeks applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position beginning in August, 2010. We seek a promising scholar-teacher in the area of ancient and classical art (encompassing the Greco-Roman tradition and the Art of Ancient Egypt and the Ancient Near East). Secondary teaching interests in areas not currently covered within the department are highly desirable (especially the history of architecture). We encourage applications from individuals whose interests go beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries and intersect with other college programs and departments, such as History, Greek and Roman Studies, Archaeology, and related disciplines.

Successful candidate must demonstrate potential for scholarly excellence and commitment to teaching at a liberal arts college. Course load is five classes per year, which will include an appropriate range of levels and topics. Candidates must be willing to embrace digital media as the primary image resource.

Ph.D. in Art or Architectural History must be completed by August, 2010. Assistant Professor of Chemistry - Organic Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry at Rhodes College seeks qualified applicants for a tenure-track faculty position to begin August 2010. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry or a closely related field. The department is seeking candidates who are committed to undergraduate teaching and who will develop a strong research program that involves undergraduate students. The primary teaching responsibilities will include Organic Chemistry and Organic Chemistry laboratories.

Assistant or Associate Professor of Economics and Business

Assistant Professor of Economics and Business – International Business

Rhodes College Department of Economics and Business seeks a tenure track assistant professor of business beginning Fall 2010. The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in any of the following fields of business, finance, management or marketing, with a concentration in international business. The successful candidate will be prepared to teach an integrative senior seminar experience in business policy for business majors, an introduction to business course with a strong international component, and one major elective in an international business field, e.g. entrepreneurship or business strategy, of the candidate's choice. Assistant Professor of English - Fiction Writer

The English Department at Rhodes College seeks a Fiction Writer to join the Department at the level of Assistant Professor (Tenure Track). We seek a published fiction writer, with specialties in American or other literatures, to teach a 2/3 load in our Creative Writing and Literature track within the English Department. We encourage applicants with an M.F.A. and/or Ph.D. in Creative Writing or Literature in hand or expected by August 2010. The candidate must demonstrate evidence of teaching excellence in both literature and creative writing, with the capacity to develop new courses in his or her areas of expertise. We seek a candidate with a strong record and potential for publication, who will join an academically rigorous department. Class sizes range from 15 to 25 students. The English Department at Rhodes College seeks a specialist with interests in British literature 1730-1830 to join the Department at the level of Assistant Professor (Tenure Track). Professor and Wilson Chair of Interdisciplinary Humanities

Rhodes College invites applications for the Spence Wilson Distinguished Chair in Humanities, a new faculty position created as the result of a major endowment to the College. In adding this Distinguished Chair to its faculty, Rhodes hopes to build on an already vibrant scholarly community in its Humanities division by recruiting a well established and dynamic scholar and undergraduate teacher. Applications are welcomed from candidates working in any area(s) of the Humanities.

Regardless of the candidate's research field, we are interested in individuals with demonstrated ability in several areas. First, we seek a scholar currently engaged in research that carries particular significance within her/his field and within the disciplines of the Humanities more broadly defined. Second, we seek a talented intellectual leader whose work will illuminate and be illuminated by scholarly dialogue among Rhodes faculty across a range of approaches and topics. Finally, we seek a colleague dedicated to undergraduate teaching, able to develop courses (and perhaps other initiatives) that bring students directly into contact with emerging knowledge in the Humanities. Rhodes offers substantial opportunity to engage in research with highly motivated students, and we seek a scholar eager to engage undergraduates with the most significant questions driving his/her own research.

Candidates should have a record of publication appropriate for a tenured appointment at or approaching the level of Full Professor. Candidates should also demonstrate a commitment to innovative and dynamic undergraduate teaching. In addition to a remuneration package commensurate with a tenured, endowed Chair appointment, this position offers substantial funding for research and scholarly activities.

Assistant Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science – Applied Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Rhodes College invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position beginning in August 2010. Strong preference will be given to applicants in any area of applied mathematics, broadly construed (e.g., mathematical biology, ordinary or partial differential equations, approximation theory, mathematical economics, applied graph theory, operations research, applied statistics, biostatistics, atmospheric/oceanic modeling, or neuromathematics). The department is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the teaching of mathematical modeling.

The successful applicant must possess a firm commitment to teaching at a liberal arts college and to continued scholarly activity. Duties of the position include teaching at all levels of the undergraduate mathematics curriculum; the teaching load is 3-2. Supervision of undergraduate research and a willingness to make connections with other disciplines at the college are both expected. Applicants should hold or expect to receive the Ph.D. in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, or a closely allied discipline by August 2010.

Assistant Professor of Modern Languages & Literatures - German

Assistant or Associate Professor of Philosophy

The Department of Philosophy at Rhodes College seeks qualified applicants for a tenure-track advanced Assistant Professor or Associate Professor to begin in August of 2010. Preference will be given to teacher/scholar candidates with two or more years of full time experience. We seek a philosopher focused on core issues in analytic philosophy and able to teach them in a diverse, pluralistic department in a liberal arts college setting. The Philosophy Department regularly contributes to the College's Interdisciplinary Humanities program and other interdisciplinary programs. AOS and AOC: some combination of Analytic Metaphysics, Epistemology, Philosophy of Mind, Philosophy of Science.  Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Philosophy. Assistant Professor of Physics

The Department of Physics invites applications for a tenure-track position at the level of Assistant Professor beginning fall 2010. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in physics or astronomy, and candidates with either theoretical or experimental research interests are welcome to apply. The successful applicant must demonstrate an enthusiasm for teaching, the ability to teach at all levels of a rigorous undergraduate physics curriculum, and the potential to carry out a productive research program involving undergraduate students. Individuals who can support our curriculum in the area of astronomy/astrophysics and who have interests that go beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries are encouraged to apply.
