STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES

Rhodes has many resources available to assist students in making transitions and achieving educational goals. In addition to the support services described below, Rhodes also assigns to each student a faculty advisor who is knowledgeable about the curriculum and trained to help students navigate academic life. For more information on academic support services, contact the Office of Student Academic Support at (901)843-3433 or visit http://www.rhodes.edu/rhodes/campuscommunity/student/academicsupport.

STUDY SKILLS ASSISTANCE
Many students find that study strategies that worked well in high school are not as effective at the college level. Throughout the school year, the College offers workshops for strengthening study skills. The Counseling and Student Development Center (901-843-3128) provides students with assistance in managing their time, broadening their learning styles, and overcoming test anxiety. Additionally, the Office of Student Academic Support (901-843-3433) offers workshops on learning in specific disciplines; these are advertised directly to students enrolled in the courses.

PEER TUTORS
Many introductory courses offer the support of a peer tutor, an upper level student who is available to work with students during scheduled periods several times each week. No appointments are necessary, as the tutoring is offered on a walk-in basis. In the past, peer tutors have been available for courses in Biology, Chemistry, Modern Languages, Business, Economics, Physics, and Psychology. Professors will notify their classes at the beginning of the term if a tutor is available for the course.

MATHELP
Mathelp is a student-run tutoring service for students in introductory mathematics courses (especially Math 115, 121, and 122). It is available three to five evenings per week in 225 Ohlendorf Hall on a drop-in basis. For more information, contact the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at (901)843-3599 or visit the department website at http://www.mathcs.rhodes.edu.

THE WRITING CENTER
The Writing Center, 315 Palmer Hall, is staffed by trained student tutors, and is open each weekday and Sunday evenings for those who need help with any aspect of the writing process: understanding the assignment, choosing or narrowing a topic, revising a draft, documenting sources, and organizing a paper. Although tutors in the Writing Center will not proofread papers, they will help students to identify writing problems and to develop skills for overcoming those problems. A variety of resources, such as grammar handbooks and style sheets, are available for student use. Students may either make an appointment or an unscheduled visit to the Writing Center in 315 Palmer Hall. For more information, visit the Writing Center’s website at http://www.rhodes.edu/writingcenter.

COUNSELING SERVICES
The Counseling and Student Development Center provides short-term confidential counseling services to all students. In addition to individual counseling, the Counseling Center provides support groups, crisis intervention, and referrals to local counselors and psychiatrists. The Counseling Center also conducts workshops and outreach programs on topics such as stress, depression, eating disorders, substance abuse, relationships, sexual assault and harassment, alcohol and drug awareness, and other issues of concern to students. All services provided by the Counseling Center staff are free of charge and confidential. For more information, contact the Student Counseling Center at (901)843-3128.

CAREER SERVICES
The staff of Career Services assists students in making career plans and achieving professional goals. Comprehensive services are available to assist students in self-assessment, career exploration, and career decision-making. In addition to completing individual career counseling, Career Services staff coordinate informative programs such as the Career Tracks (a career planning program for first-year students), Sophomore Career Success Seminar, Graduate School Expo, Career Fair Expo, Test Drive (a practice graduate admissions test program), Resume Writing, Interviewing, and many major-specific seminars. The Career Services Office also coordinates shadow experiences, the academic internship program, and offers many additional resources to help students explore career options in light of their personality, abilities, interests, and values. The Rhodes Career Library houses up-to-date career resources and worldwide job listings. For more information, contact Career Services at (901)843-3800 or visit http://www.rhodes.edu/careerservices.
