  • Dr. Thomas Marshall's Plenary address
The Science of Lightning: In this presentation I will discuss several fundamental questions about the physics of lightning that have puzzled scientists for centuries. How is a lightning flash initiated? What happens in the cloud after a flash is initiated? What controls where the main branches of a flash go? Why do some flashes strike the ground while others do not? Are there really "bolts from the blue"? My research at the University of Mississippi involves launching instrumented balloons into thunderstorms to determine the in-cloud electric field and electric potential. Recently my colleagues and I have been able to combine the balloon data with radar data and with data showing the paths of individual lightning flashes through a cloud. In this presentation I will show how these combined data allow us to answer several age-old questions.
