Languages & Cultures
Training in Languages
Students who major in philosophy are encouraged to develop expertise in foreign languages. Greek and/or Latin are encouraged for those working with ancient and medieval texts, while German and/or French are important for those studying Continental thought from the past few centuries.
Familiarity with History and Cultures
Students are encouraged to develop a familiarity with the civilizations of the philosophers they study. In addition to the history sequence the department offers, students should consider courses in the History department (any of the 200 level courses, though HIST 211–233 are perhaps most natural complements to the department’s courses) and Greek and Roman Studies (especially GRS 211–233) to deepen their understanding.
