Rhodes College has a long-standing commitment to promoting service activities. The philosophy department has participated in Rhodes’ efforts to utilize Service Learning as an effective tool for learning and assessing complex ideas. Consequently, courses in American Philosophy, Optimism/Pessimism and Theory of Knowledge have included service-learning components. Typically, students integrate course material with service experience in a paper presented to the class at the end of the semester. Often these papers have served as stepping stones in helping students develop their personal philosophies. We encourage students to consider taking a course with a service-learning component, whether in the philosophy department or another department, and to think about the way in which service activities affect (or should affect) philosophical issues or positions.
