Parent/Family Weekend

September 26 – 28, 2008

Parent/Family Weekend is your opportunity to not only see your student, but experience some of what Memphis and Rhodes has to offer. Attend a class or an athletic event on campus. Participate in community service or check your student out in action as he or she participates in a number of student-designed and led events. Learn about all of your student’s favorite things to do and places to go in Memphis.

Please note that this is a sample schedule.  The 2008 schedule has not been finalized yet.

Friday, September

Attend Class with your student(s)
This is your chance to be a student again.  Come prepared to learn a new thing or two and remember your pencil and paper!  Be sure to have your student check with their faculty member about whether your attendance is limited due to exams or other circumstances.

Taking Aim: Selections from the Elliot L. Perry Collection

Clough-Hanson Gallery (located in Clough Hall)
This art exhibition consists of a fraction of Perry’s considerable collection of work by some of the most important young artists in America today.  Be sure to visit the exhibit that brings together some of the most important contemporary African American artists working today including Kara Walker, Radcliff Bailey, Michael Ray, Glenn Ligon, Renee Cox, Xaviera Simmons, Kara Walker,  Kehinde Wiley, Leslie Hewitt, Wangechi Mutu, Wardell Milan, Demetrius Oliver, Hank Willis Thomas, Robert Pruitt, Jeff Sonhouse, and Mickalene Thomas.

Experiential learning is a fundamental element of the Foundations Curriculum, and internships are one way students can gain this valuable experience.  Please join us and share your ideas and expectations regarding student internships.

Six students were selected last spring as Buckman Interns and each spent nine weeks over the summer working as an intern in a foreign setting.  These six students will share their summer internship experiences from Spain, France, India, Belize, and Ghana.  An informal reception with light refreshments will follow.

Nothing says Memphis like good old fashioned BBQ.  Join us for some mouth-watering food and stay for music that is sweet to your ears! Pre-registration is required by September 14th for this free event.  See the registration form for details.

Rhodes Invitational Cross Country Meet

Plough Park Plough Park is located off Walnut Grove Road, between I-240 and Germantown Road. The course is on the north side of the park near the Mullins Station Road entrance. The women run a 5000 meters at 9:30 a.m. and the men run an 8K at 10:10 a.m.

1st Annual Parent/Family Weekend ‘Stick and ‘Socks Concert
Blount Auditorium
Come and listen to the amazing sounds of Rhodes College two a cappella ensembles.  Lipstick on Your Collar, (the women’s ensemble) and Woolsocks (the men’s ensemble) will perform for parents, family members and Rhodes students.  You do not want to miss [hearing] these performances!

Rhodes Tower Observatory and Deck (weather permitting)
Rhodes′ observatory will be open to parents and students. Parents and students may look through the giant telescope inside the observatory or through smaller ones on the deck.

Soulful Expressions

BCLC Ballroom
During this event, singers, dancers, poets, and other artists will express themselves through their respective art forms in a free-flowing, casual environment.  Rhodes’ multicultural students will host booths highlighting important aspects of their cultures through arts, crafts, and demonstrations.  Attendees are also encouraged to participate in the event via the “Open Mic” format of the night.  Food and drinks will be provided.
