Prospective Parents

Welcome from the Hofto Family

We are excited that you and your student are considering Rhodes College, which has provided an outstanding educational experience for two of our children—Meghan (2007) and Laura (2010).  We have found that Rhodes offers the best of two worlds—a small, beautiful, academically-excellent liberal arts institution, located in a large, dynamic southern city.  Rhodes’ strategy of partnering with Memphis in a multitude of ways significantly enhances the educational experience and, of course, provides any number of cultural/entertainment venues.

Meghan and Laura have experienced first-hand the close student-professor interaction found at Rhodes.  Both girls conducted research for a chemistry professor, leading each to be published.  Meghan spent a summer conducting research at the University of Pennsylvania’s Children’s Hospital.  Laura’s work allowed her to travel to The Netherlands and Spain to present at chemistry conferences, and a summer conducting research at Herriot Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland.  Her research at Rhodes led to the award of a Goldwater Scholarship in 2008.  Opportunities like these, in a variety of fields, abound at the college.  Meghan’s research certainly played a part in her acceptance to medical school.

We also encourage your student to consider the study-abroad opportunities available at Rhodes.  Meghan spent a summer in Scotland at Stirling University, while Laura will spend a semester in Prague.  Rhodes offers a number of different study options and provides the support staff who can advise your student in selecting the best program for her academic interests.

We have found that the school provides a good balance between academics, which are challenging, and a healthy social life.  Greek life is optional.  Most parties are open to all students, regardless of Greek affiliation.  Service is a very important part of student life, and a wide variety of opportunities are available.

Besides us, a number of other parents are willing to share their Rhodes experiences and help provide the information that is important to you.  We encourage you to contact any number of them and ask the hard questions which are important in your college search/decision process.  If your student ultimately attends Rhodes, we hope that you will feel the sense of family that we have experienced at the college.
