Prof. Stephen Haynes Publishes Article on Huffington Post About the Civil Rights Movement

Publication Date: 8/12/2014

Dr. Stephen Haynes, professor of religious studies at Rhodes, recently attended the Summer Institute on the Civil Rights Movement sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Fannie Lou Hamer Institute at Jackson State University.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Freedom Summer, when volunteers from across the nation gathered in Mississippi in 1964 to end to the system of segregation. Haynes writes in an article posted on the Huffington Post, “I thought that living in the South most of my life had left me with a pretty clear understanding of the movement, its leaders, tactics and results. But spending three weeks among historians and political scientists engaged in teaching and researching the movement left me with new insights, not all of them academic.” Read more.

Haynes has been at Rhodes since 1989 and offers courses on religion and racism, the Holocaust, and religion and literature.
