2013 Business/Econ International Interns Named

Four students have been selected the 2013 recipients of international internship scholarships awarded by Rhodes’ Department of Economics and the Department of Commerce & Business. Students will work at least eight weeks in countries of their choosing and with companies they believe will give them the best opportunity to gain valuable career experience. The scholarships are designed to assist the selected students in becoming engaged citizens with global perspectives through immersion into different cultures. The four students along with their proposed internships are listed below.

Wasfy Iskander Scholarship
Department of Economics

Benjamin Priday is a sophomore from Sikeston, Mo., with an economics and commerce & business bridge major. He plans to work for a micro-financing non-profit serving low income areas or with an Irish seed hatchery group that assists entrepreneurs in developing their businesses. Priday hopes to learn how past and current projects occurring in Ireland are affecting the macro economy today. He also is looking forward to experiencing a different culture and environment.

Morelle Legg Scholarship
Department of Commerce & Business
Cape Town, South Africa

Mary Reed is a junior from Kansas City, Mo., with a double majoring in economics and commerce & business. Reed’s internship will be with The Business Bridge Initiative where she will assist with media related tasks, interview and profile small businesses in Cape Town, and develop strategic partnerships with local entrepreneurs. Reed says she hopes to learn more about what economic and business development careers entail, and she is honored to represent Rhodes while abroad.

Theodore Eckels Scholarship

Cape Coast, Ghana

Rosemary Sirois is a junior from Concord, N.C., with a major in commerce & business. Her internship is with Kiva where she will gather information about female entrepreneurs to publicize on Kiva’s website. She also will attend group meetings with the entrepreneurs to discuss loan repayment and other financial matters and serve as a resource for time management and financial management skills. Sirois’ goal is to gain more knowledge about micro finance as well as help empower the Ghanaian women to succeed in their business endeavors.

Theodore Eckels Scholarship

Barcelona, Spain

Shane Watson is a junior from O’Fallon, Ill., with a major in commerce & business (international track). His internship is with Trip4Real, an eTravel startup and P2P Marketplace for travel experiences in Spain. Watson will be working closely with the company founder and other employees to develop marketing strategies, enhance public relations, and recruit experience providers and experience seekers. Watson is very excited for this opportunity to learn methods of interaction between different cultures, while improving his Spanish communication skills.
