As part of the college vision, Rhodes aspires to attract and graduate students with a compassion for others and who translate personal concern into effective leadership and action. Some New York area alumni are doing just that in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.
Marcie Allen, president of MAC Presents in New York, N.Y. and member of Rhodes Class of 1996, has been leading efforts to deliver funds, food, water and other supplies to residents of Rockaway Beach, N.Y.
“It is going to be a long road, but I am truly amazed at all the people who have stepped forward to support our efforts on Beach 119th St.,” says Allen. “Many have donated Home Depot gift certificates/monies.”
On Facebook, she has posted photos of the Rockaway community and asks those who want to “adopt a family” to contact her at marcie@macpresents.com. She adds that Billboard Magazine is running a story about her efforts.
Says Allen, “We are focusing on Beach 119th St., and many of the residents still don’t have power. We can make a difference, one family at a time.”
Other New York area alumni Rob Kneip ’08 and Maddie Callis ’10 also are working on efforts to help those affected by Hurricane Sandy.
