West Village Residence Hall Opens with the New Academic Year

Publication Date: 8/22/2012

With classes for the 164th academic year at Rhodes starting on Wednesday, August 22, students have settled into the 17 residence buildings on campus—including the brand-new West Village. Running parallel with the main campus entrance, Bailey Lane, the hall forms a verdant quadrangle with Alfred C. Glassell Hall, Moore Moore Infirmary and the new patio on the north side of the Catherine Burrow Refectory.

Built between March 2011 and July 2012, West Village adds 52,000 square feet of space for 141 students in deluxe suites. Each suite houses six to eight people in single or double rooms, with one or two bathrooms and a common area. An ample kitchen available to all residents is located on the first floor, adjacent to a large common area. The hall includes a variety of social spaces, including two with fireplaces, and every floor has a laundry room.

As with other recent building projects at Rhodes, students played an integral part in determining the direction of the project. Student focus groups gave feedback on the initial design and helped choose interior finishes, light fixtures and furniture. They also suggested additional soundproofing between suites and floors.
