Happy Birthday, Dr. Rhodes!

Today (Jan. 27), the Society of Physics Students and the Department of Physics will host a party celebrating the  birthday of Dr. Peyton Nalle Rhodes, namesake of the college who was a professor of physics. The campus community is invited to the festivities beginning at 4 p.m. in Rhodes Tower 226.

Rhodes was born on Jan. 29, 1900 and would have been 112 this year.

The celebration will include games, cake and a touch of history for all to enjoy.

Founded in 1848, Rhodes College is a private, coeducational college of liberal arts and sciences. It aspires to graduate students with a lifelong passion for learning, a compassion for others, and the ability to translate academic study and personal concern into effective leadership and action in their communities and the world.

Dr Rhodes grew up with my grandfather in Crozet, VA and was in his wedding. When I was a prospective student at Rhodes, my father stayed with him while I stayed in the dorm. He was a lovely man and always said that the college would not have been named for him if his last name had been Raspberry!
