Remembering the “12 Iron Men”
Publication Date: 10/28/2011
Seventy-five years ago, the “12 iron men” of the Southwestern Lynx football team accomplished what many thought to be impossible--defeating nationally ranked Vanderbilt 12 to 0 on the Commodores’ home field. At the time, this was widely considered the greatest sports triumph ever registered by a Memphis team. Upon their arrival home, the squad was celebrated on campus and throughout the city. At tomorrow’s game against Sewanee, Rhodes will take a moment of silence to honor this remarkable achievement and remember the team, students, faculty and staff who were members of the Rhodes community back in 1936, especially the following “12 iron men” who led the team to victory:
Red Bergfeld
Red Davis
Henry Hammond
Thayer Houts
Bob Lee
Hartwell Morton
Orlie Nettles
Clay Nickells
Dick Parker
Jimmy Sasser
Levon Self
Neil Tapp
