Prof. Hoffmeister Chosen the 2011 Outstanding Chapter Advisor by National Society of Physics Students
Publication Date: 10/12/2011
Dr. Brent Hoffmeister, chair of the Department of Physics at Rhodes, has been awarded the 2011 Outstanding Chapter Advisor Award by the National Society of Physics Students (SPS). The honor consists of a plaque and a cash award for Hoffmeister, the Rhodes student chapter, and the physics department.
Hoffmeister has served as an SPS Chapter Advisor for 14 years, and nomination letters gave examples of his outstanding leadership and compassion for students in physics. It also was noted that he actively promotes student research and outreach and works to build responsible and contributing members of the scientific community.
Wrote Rhodes alumnus Andrew Shores, “The greatest lesson imparted by Dr. Hoffmeister was the importance of communication. Science is a collaborative community, and no matter how smart you are, a scientist who cannot effectively communicate their ideas will not be successful. In SPS, Dr. Hoffmeister used our educational outreach and scientific symposiums to inspire us to speak confidently about what we were communicating and always make sure we knew our audience. ”
Consideration for the Outstanding Chapter Advisor Award is based on leadership, student leadership development, support, and encouragement provided by the advisor to create and sustain a successful program.
