Publication Date: 7/1/2011
The Memphis Rotary Club has named Rhodes alumnus James E. Eikner, Jr. as its Rotarian of the Year recognizing his outstanding service to the organization and to the community at large.
Eikner has been a member of the Memphis Rotary Club since 1998 and served on its board of directors from 2000-2002. However, his most memorable role in the club is as its weekly “newscaster” where he offers his unique interpretation of the news of the week from the Rotary, local community, the nation and sometimes the world at large.
Eikner is the marketing manager for WKNO, and often can be heard on WKNO-FM and seen on Channel 10 during fundraising drives . At the suggestion of Eikner, the Memphis Rotary Club served as a sponsor for WKNO’s airing of The American Experience which highlighted the work in eradicating polio. In his honor, the Memphis Rotary Club also has donated $1,000 to the Foundation of Rotary International.
A member of the Rhodes Class of 1957, Eikner has served as president of the Alumni Association Executive Board and has been recognized for his service to the college.
