Outstanding Staff Award Recipients Announced

Publication Date: 5/20/2011

Rhodes College paid tribute to staff on May 19 with a brunch held in the Bryan Campus Life Center. Four Rhodes employees were recognized with the college’s 2011 Outstanding Staff Awards.

This year’s recipient of the Outstanding Administrative Services Staff award is Debra Douglas, Housekeeper. Nominators wrote: “She has a positive attitude, an outstanding work ethic—willing to tackle any assignment. Debra is always smiling and a joy to work with every day. Her commitment to completing her responsibilities thoroughly each day, make her an important part of the team.”

Departmental Assistant Linda Gibson received the Outstanding Administrative Staff award. Her nominators wrote: “She doesn’t just ‘do the job,’ but rather she always comes up with a better idea of how to do the job, saving us countless hours of extra work. She approaches everything, from photocopies or proofreading yet another letter of recommendation to organizing events for 300 people, with professionalism and good cheer. Student workers find that she cares not just about the job that they do for the department, but also how they are doing academically, personally, socially.  She is a mentor, teacher, and friend to them.”

Outstanding Administrator awards were presented to Elizabeth Gates, Archivist and Special Collections Librarian, and Kim Bennett, Associate Director of College Events and Scheduling.

(l-r) Elizabeth Gates, Debra Douglas, President Troutt, Linda Gibson, Kim Bennett Nominators wrote about Gates: “Gracious, calm, dependable. Elizabeth cares about Rhodes and cares about her work.  She is a quiet hero, a person who could be in the limelight with the work that she has accomplished for the college, but prefers to remain in the background. She is always pushing forward with technology and the collections, and she isn’t through yet!  Who knows what interesting projects she will be working on tomorrow so that we can all have history at our fingertips?  Only the future will really know what she has done to help us aggregate thousands of bits of college history into our amazing Archives.”
Bennett′s daily schedule can include an amazing number of events, and her nominators wrote about her, “No matter how complicated or overwhelming the request, Kim is unflappable. Whether it’s a campus group or a big corporate client, she provides a cool-headed and clear response to meeting customer needs. At the end of the day, she makes sure that both the people coming to event as well as the people involved in staging it have had a good experience. And, throughout the year, that′s a lot of people!  And she does it all with one of the friendliest smiles on campus.”

“Team Rhodes” Recognition for collaboration across departmental lines went to the following groups:
