Dr. Joseph Montelione has been an assistant professor of music at Rhodes College since 2008. His responsibilities include teaching the trumpet studio, conducting, chamber music, orchestra and directing the orchestral performance division. He has been a clinician for the Los Angeles Philharmonic, a member of the artist faculty for the National Trumpet Competition and a performing artist-educator for Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp and the New England Music Camp. As an orchestral trumpeter, he has performed with the Alabama Symphony, Moscow State Radio Symphony, Bayreuth Festival Orchestra, Erie Symphony and Washington Symphony Orchestra. As a commercial artist he has worked with Billy Joel, Tony Bennett, Charlie Daniels, Amy Grant, Don Menza, Bob Mintzer and Wessell Anderson. Equally skilled on the podium, Dr. Montelione has conducted a wide variety of groups including the Memphis Chamber Players, West Point Military Academy Band, Falls Church Orchestra, University of Southern California Chamber Winds, USC Brass Choir, SC Trumpet Ensemble and the Capistrano Performing Arts Center Orchestra. He spends his summers as music director of the CRT Orchestra. He holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts from the University of Southern California, a Master of Arts degree from George Mason University and a Bachelors of Music from the State University of New York College at Fredonia. Previous trumpet teachers have included: Carl Sakofsky, Robert Sullivan, William Vacchiano, Dennis Edelbrock and Boyde Hood. Previous conducting teachers include: Russel Mikkelson, Lucida Carver and Larry Livingston.
